MEET CATHERINE BOSSÉ

À LA RENCONTRE DE CATHERINE BOSSÉ

An interview conducted by Josée Cousineau

Today, we are meeting with painter Catherine Bossé. Born in Montreal in 1972, she holds a DEC in Fashion Design from Collège LaSalle and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UQAM. For several years, she has pursued a career as a painter, during which she has participated in several solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions, including "Les Femmeuses" at Pratt & Whitney Canada. Her works are part of private and public collections, notably those of the National Bank, the Jean Coutu Foundation, Chaussures Browns, and the Desjardins Trust.

Background

Which artists have influenced your work?

Although their pictorial worlds are very different from mine, several artists influence me: Frida Kahlo, Egon Schiele, and Dominique Fortin, to name just a few. For me, they are a true source of motivation and inspiration.

Creative process and inspiration

Tell me about your creative process.

Creativity is a muscle. Like an athlete, you have to exercise it as often as possible. Before starting a creation, I like to project myself and visualize the finished work.

Which medium do you prefer and why?

I mainly work on wood panels and use acrylic paint. I incorporate a lot of collage and like to incorporate fabric, wallpaper, and embroidery into my creations.

Works and style

In a few words, how would you describe your artistic style?

I create a feminine, colorful, and playful universe, with a touch of humor. I like to mix materials and textures to tell little stories. I also write poetry on my paintings, which acts as a key to decode the meaning of the work.

To finish, what are you currently working on?

I am working on a series entitled "Les Érudites, les Courageuses et les Prodigieuses : Portraits de femmes savantes". I present portraits of women who lived in a more or less distant past and had extraordinary lives, which leads me to do a lot of research. In fact, I am already preparing a new series for an exhibition in 2027.
